This morning my cell phone rang at 7:15. It was in the other room and I was still in bed. Also I recently changed my cell phone ring to a RT ringtone so I have little incentive to answer the phone because I want to hear the entire ring. I let it go to voicemail.
It was my boss, telling me that I didn't need to come in because of the impending snow and the governor had told all "non-essential" employees to stay home.
Um......
I realize that by "non-essential", my boss meant that I didn't have anything scheduled in court today, but I have to admit those aren't words you want to hear your boss say at 7:15 in the morning in this particular economy. I do have court scheduled for tomorrow though so I'll be essential again. Yay!
So I'm at home, feeling like a bit of an idiot given that it hasn't even really started snowing yet. Granted, it is supposed to be blizzard-like conditions later and worst case scenario would be getting stuck at work which is thirty minutes away, so in the meantime, I'm staying put.
I'm also in my jammies so I decided to post what I wore this weekend instead of what I'm wearing right now.
I came home from shopping on Saturday and proudly told my husband that I had spent -$80.
Husband: How did you manage that?
Me: Well, I returned $40 worth of stuff at The Limited, $20 worth of stuff at Banana Republic, and $60 worth of stuff at Anthropologie. Then I only spent $40 at Target so I spent -$80.
At this point, Husband spent several minutes explaining to me that I started off my shopping trip "$200 in the hole" and by returning things I was just slowly "clawing my way out" of this massive deficit. I admit that I did tune him out (especially because earlier in the day I had specifically gave him the opportunity to tell me to return the Beribboned Buds Cardigan when I bought this imposter at The Limited. "Do you still like the Anthropologie one better knowing that it is twice as expensive at the other one?" And he said, "Yes!" He's an enabler and then tries to make me feel bad about it! I'm sure that qualifies as some sort of spousal abuse.)
But, again, I digress.
Not only did I basically make money while shopping, but I looked pretty adorable in the process.
Camisole, Ann Taylor Loft, size Medium (from last spring)
Blouse, Ann Taylor, size 10 (from spring 2007)
Cardigan, Ann Taylor, size Large (available here and on sale!)
Jeans, Banana Republic Classic Skinny Jeans, size 14L (similiar here)
Boots, Anne Klein, size 9 (available here and on sale!)
Necklace, Kohls
Earrings, Kohls
I thought this outfit worked out pretty well if I do say so myself. I liked the length of the cardigan with the skinny jeans and the oversizedness of the sweater balances out the bottom relatively well (as the internal Medium vs. Large debate continues indefinitely). I was rather impressed with myself for thinking to knot the necklace to pull it up closer to my face (which in retrospect you can't really see here, but trust me, it was fabulous!)
For those of you also stuck indoors today, here is a promo code!
J.Crew - save 20% off all orders of $175 or more with the promo code SHHH. This code expires on Saturday and is good online only.
Enjoy the snow (and shopping)!

haha, yeah I've tried to pull that one before. If you've already SPENT the $$, then it's gone. So if you return something and buy something new, it's just a bonus. It costs nothing. :) Love the pattern on that blouse and the boots, too cute! I wish they had them in my size. wah!
ReplyDeleteExactly! Why does Jamie not understand how this works? LOL
ReplyDeleteYep, I tried to purchase The LImited's version of the Beribboned cardigan but just could not do it, even though it was so much cheaper. The Anthro one seemed more vibrant in color and more unusual. See? I just talked myself into it all over again.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% - if I hadn't seen the Anthro one first, I think I could have dealt with the Limited one, but the Anthro one's details are so pretty! I might wear mine on Friday! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure in economic terms, it's a sunk cost and he can't consider it anymore. That money is already spent. Now you're just using your resources to maximize future purchases :-)
ReplyDeleteHaha wouldn't Jamie love if I presented him with an actual economic argument to back up my crazy shopping math?
